Property and Organization

Introduction

A current objective regarding property and organization that is nearly complete is to reduce my possessions until all my property is easily managed and there is relative unconcern about what happens to anything I own.

There are some possessions I care for more than others, particularly my writings and productions, and photographs collected over the years. For a very long time I’ve worked on software and an organization approach to making sure that my files are easily located, are backed up, and are publicly available, which means they are also easily available to myself in the same way they are available to everyone else. For example, much of the materials I’m wanting to keep is on this website or is located on my web server. These materials are also meticulously backed up and organized on my own storage media, using an approach that requried my expertise in software architecture and system design.

Other interests in property related to the quality of the property and limitations on spending to ensure that property only includes items worth having, and little that is superfluous. Since I was a young child it was natural for me to want possessions that were higher in cost and higher in value, because these possessions were ones I knew would be of lasting interest and quality, and not things that would be discarded quickly. When I was young I wanted, for gifts, presents that were large and fewer in number, that would provide interest and satisfaction for a longer period of time. For example, I wanted gaming systems, electronics like a television, stereo systems of good quality, and other items that are not at all like toys. Toys, by comparison, are used very briefly, are cheaper so can be purchased in greater quantity, and are thrown away after a short period because of lost interest. There is also a juvenile/puerile component to buying toys that have very limited utility, and continuous use of such toys, or products, probably indicates lower intelligence. A more intelligent approach to procurement does seem to indicate that higher priced, higher value products are superior to lower price, lower quality products, as long as that extra spending does not go towards luxury, and towards actual value.

Frugality, ease of organization, and maintenance allow for extra funds and energy to be applied to other activities and things that are of higher value. Most do not enjoy being disorganized, or having a weak control over the preservation of property, and of not having savings because of excess expenditure.

This category has reduced priority now that I am semi-retired and am in a solid state regarding possessions. There are few things I need, and most is completely paid for. However, I do have a need, which is somewhat new, to rely on possessions I already have, rather than procuring new possessions, to fulfill certain goals and to complete certain projects. I have, after attaining a certain level of income, moved out from my earlier more frugal spending habits to being more inclined to browse and shop as a way of spending my time, and of preferring to purchase than to think about how my existing possessions allow me to do what is required.

As with the other sections in the personal form, there are few areas of great importance concerning property, and few rules to create and internalize, to really get it correct. I will record here my new reduced focus on property which will be useful to my own development and discipline. It is hoped that these same focal points may support others in coming to a point of completion or fulfillment regarding their own property too.
